Whether underground or-as in our present moment-out in the open, these currents of resentment, suspicion, and conspiratorial delusion received their authoritative treatment from Hofstadter, among the greatest of twentieth-century American historians, at a time when many public intellectuals and scholars did not take them seriously enough. Together for the first time: two masterworks on the undercurrents of the American mind by one of our greatest historians Richard Hofstadter's Anti-Intellectualism in American Life and The Paranoid Style in American Politics are two essential works that lay bare the worrying trends of irrationalism, demagoguery, destructive populism, and conspiratorial thinking that have long influenced American politics and culture.

Reached by phone at her Ohio residence, McMillan said that the spark for the novel came from uncovering family relics at the farm, including a scrapbook her husband’s great-grandmother had kept of all their 1920s house parties. A mysterious necklace from India, which holds the key to a long-buried family secret, weaves their tales together. The book depicts two generations of women in the Quincy family - a Jazz Age beauty and a 21st century lawyer. In conjunction with the publication of her enthralling new novel, “The Necklace,” McMillan will make an appearance at Palo Alto’s Books Inc. And McMillan pursued a career writing fiction. Still, her Dad’s insistence on authenticity is no surprise to her: we learn that he’s passionately interested in the Iron Age, with all its rituals, and as a dogmatic authoritarian will brook nothing less than the strictest adherence to his interpretation of how they lived back in the day. The set up is described from Sylvie’s resigned teenage point of view: the cramped tent she has to share with her parents, the ceaseless trials of keeping the fire going, the indigestible gruel they have to eat for breakfast, the moccasins on their feet which give no protection from sharp stones on the moorland paths. They’re not academics, but the Dad is a keen hobby historian and, we learn, has taken annual leave to participate in the project. They’re accompanied by 17 year old Sylvie and her parents from Rochdale. A university professor and three of his students taking a course in ‘experiential archaeology’ have constructed a replica Iron Age Camp and mean to live as Iron Age people for a period of days. That image isn’t far off the mark-the events in this powerful short novel take place in nearby Northumberland and concern a group of people engaged in a historical re-enactment.
